When MasterCard was first formed by United California Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, Crocker National Bank and the Bank of California in 1966, it was deemed as a competitor for the VISA credit card of Visa Inc. Then known as 'Master Charge: The Interbank Card', it received a shot in the shoulder when First National City Bank merged its Everything Card with Master Charge. By 1979, it was rechristened as MasterCard. Formed as a co-op of banks, the company underwent a sea of change in the year 2006. The adoption of a new corporate logo and a new tagline, 'The Heart of Commerce', was a proof of the growing dominance of the brand in the market, along with its famous counterpart, VISA. In the same year, the company announced its first ever public offering becoming the second largest and one among the high profile US IPOs.

However, things were not as pleasant as it seemed. At a time when IPOs in the financial sector were registering substantial returns, MasterCard was going through a tough time troubled by dozens of lawsuits making the offering not so priceless. The credit card major had estimated to spend about $650 million of the IPO returns on legal charges. The historical reputation of having always displayed a steady and stable performance notwithstanding, the prospect of having to shoulder the legal charges of the company put off a large number of long-term investors. On the contrary, the increasing number of customers favoring electronic payments over paper money had ensured that the company saw a 13% ($1.7 billion) rise in profits. The company had initially planned to offer about 46% of the shares i.e., 61.5 million shares priced in the $40 to $43 range expecting the value of the company to increase to nearly $5.6 billion. About 13.5 million shares of the offering were donated to the MasterCard Foundation, a charitable foundation. This resulted in company posting a loss for the year 2006.

Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase and HSBC, who acted as underwriters, lowered the offering price to $39 in a move to allow the stock to start well in the market. However, in spite of market speculations, the trading ended at $46, an 18% increase compared to the initial offering price. By the end of the first day, the stock price witnessed a 15% growth reaching a maximum of $85 at one point of time. On the brighter side, the IPO allowed the company to make acquisitions, explore new technology and recruit the best at a time when competition was at its peak in the credit card industry.

Yet many of the experts in food, nutrition, health and fitness are not business experts. So they start a business and then struggle to make enough money. A few simple changes can make a big difference.

Here are five steps to tune up your wellness business. Follow this advice and to get more clients to hire you and earn more income.

1. Run your business like a business not like a hobby. What does this mean? This means you work. It does not mean you simply work when it is convenient. When you are not engaged delivering services to your clients you are marketing your business to attract more clients. This also means you pay attention to your money including incoming sales and outgoing expenses and investments.

It means investing in your business and not trying to do it all on your own. You need to spend money to make money. Do what you do best and delegate or hire the rest. That may mean spending can get ahead of income because you are investing for the business you want to have - not the one you currently have.

One way to test if you are running your business like a business owner or hobbyist owner is to give yourself a performance review. Do you meet or exceed expectations? Or need improvement. Do you deserve a raise or a promotion? How about appointment to head up a key project in your company? What is your area for growth (aka weakness) in the coming year

2. Be crystal clear on your niche and know your ideal client very well. Often times there is resistance to selecting a specific niche due to the fear of not having enough business. Actually the opposite is true. It is much easier and more effective to market to niche. You can more easily become the expert in your specific niche.

A niche makes marketing your business more affordable. When you carve out a specific niche, you can target your marketing message and make it more clear, precise, and easy for your ideal client to hear and say "s/he gets me!"

3. Have a marketing message that makes clients want to find out more. There are two common mistakes entrepreneurs make regarding their marketing impact statement or E-Speech. One is talking about yourself and your services and credentials on your website home page or when answering the question what do you do.

The second mistake is a marketing impact statement that is vague or confusing. This mistakes is often due to a lack of clear understanding of your ideal client and the pain or problem your business satisfies. Make your marketing impact statement all about your client, their problem and your business solution. Speak to them in their own words - everyday language not jargon.

4. Integrate all the parts of your business into a systematic, profitable business model. Small business owners often have a variety of marketing tools and tactics but no systems, no strategies, no business model. A website, blog, social media, advertising, health fairs or brochure will not be effective unless they are integrated into an overall strategy to grow the business. A profitable business model is a written and graphic description of how the business makes money from client attraction strategies through all client contact, customer service, additional purchases and referrals

5. Put it together and put it to work. Success results from taking action. Many times, it is easier to stay stuck in the planning and learning mode. Stuck in your office instead of out in front of customers. Stuck waiting for perfect. Running a successful business means getting to know as many potential ideal clients as possible. You know these sayings very well, and all of their different variations. Your parents, teachers and business mentors have said them to you multiple times, and you know why? They say them because they are true.

To put it plainly, business owners tend to be type A personalities and you'll often find them hard at work around the clock. Unfortunately, this all work and no play attitude can lead to a whole host of problems. We're talking about burnout, stress, fatigue, mental and physical health issues - not to mention boredom. This kind of work ethic can also end up killing a marriage, or at least create a rift between you and your spouse that will be hard to close.

It's time to add a little fun in your life. Here are three ways to add a little more fun into your life now, as opposed to waiting.

1) Plan Weekly Fun Time

Plan time for fun weekly. Not monthly, not annually - weekly. Do something you enjoy with the people you love once per week. And while you are at it, since you are so good at planning now, you might as well plan time for fun monthly, quarterly and annually. You're an entrepreneur so that you can have freedom and control over your schedule right? Would you choose to work 24/7? Of course not, so plan fun into your life just like you plan work.

2) Zen and the Art of Business

Live/work in the moment. This makes working hard and playing hard easier to do. When you're working, focus on work. Be there, in the moment without thinking about what you could or should be doing. You're doing it. Pay attention to that. When it's time to play, play. Don't think about work or what you could or should be doing. When you are playing, recognize that you are playing. Simple right? Well, it is not as easy as it sounds.

Living in the moment is something that takes practice; however, the rewards are well worth it. Your time will be much more rewarding, productive and enjoyable whether you're working or playing.

3) Reward Yourself When You Deserve It

Give yourself more than just a pat on the back for a job well done. Reward yourself. Do the things you enjoy doing. If you love dancing, go dancing. If you love hiking in the woods, go hiking in the woods. List the things you like/want to do that are fun, and do them. Just like you'd make a task list and check things off as you accomplish them for your business, make a list of the fun things you like and want to do and check them off as you do them. This embraces that type A personality you have and still lets you have fun.

Experts from around the world and the most successful people you've ever met do take time to have fun. Make a schedule for fun. Plan it into your day, your week, your month and your year. You're a business owner and that gives you the freedom to take vacations when you want to, to take a day off when you want to and to have a little bit of fun right smack dab in the middle of the day without risking your job or angering your boss.
